Welcome to Libya! Upon your arrival at Mitiga International Airport, you will be greeted and transported to your hotel.
Set off to explore the Libyan Capital city, accompanied by your knowledgeable local guide and immerse yourself in the lively labyrinthine streets of Tripoli’s old medina. Leptis Magna is thought to have been discovered by the Phoenicians as early as 7 BC. Upon entering the site, the sheer magnitude of Leptis Magna’s architectural marvels unfolds before your very eyes. Be amazed by the remarkably preserved ruins, including the commanding Arch of Septimius Severus, the awe-inspiring Severan Basilica, and the intricately designed Theatre, once the venue for grand performances.
Leptis Magna, regarded as one of the most beautiful cities of ancient Rome facing the Mediterranean Sea, offers a glimpse into its former glory through its standing remnants. This morning, you will transfer to the airport for your flight to Albayda (1.5 hrs.), a key base for visiting the Ancient Greek ruins of Cyrene. Nestled within the lush, forested landscapes of the Green Mountains (Jebel Akhdar), Cyrene offers a striking contrast to the arid surroundings, with fertile land overlooking the stunning Mediterranean coastline. This area is one of the few forested regions in Libya. If time permits, take a leisurely walk through the local produce market to soak in the vibrant atmosphere.
Relax at Ras al-Helal’s beautiful green beaches, framed by turquoise waters and spectacular waterfalls that wind through rocky coastal canyons. This serene coastal spot is one of Libya’s most breathtaking natural settings. After soaking in the Mediterranean beauty, continue your journey to Apollonia, an ancient Greek city founded in the 6th century BC. Once the main harbour for Cyrene, Apollonia boasts well-preserved Roman baths, an impressive theatre, and a Byzantine palace. Spend the morning exploring the archaeological site of Cyrene, historically known as the ‘Athens of Africa.’ Here, you’ll uncover the 2000-year-old ruins of the ancient Greek colony located near Shahat. Founded by the Greeks in 631 BC, Cyrene was later occupied by the Romans and Arabs. It was part of the powerful city-state of Pentapolis, second in size only to Athens. A devastating earthquake in 365 AD reduced the city to ruins and buried much of it under sand. Today, only 20% of the ruins are visible, while the rest remain hidden beneath the surface. This ancient Greek city is even mentioned in the New Testament but was forgotten until its rediscovery in the 18th century.
This afternoon, you will travel back to Tripoli (1.5 hr. flight). Indulge in the flavours of Libyan cuisine at one of the city’s local restaurants, where you can sample traditional dishes bursting with aromatic spices and fresh ingredients. Immerse yourself in the local culture by engaging in conversations with friendly locals and experience the warmth and hospitality that Libyans are renowned for. (B)

Your journey today begins in Gaser Alhaj, a charming village nestled amidst the rugged mountains of Jabel Nafusa. Take in the breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes as you explore this tranquil haven. Immerse yourself in the rich Berber culture and traditions that have been preserved for generations. You’ll have the unique opportunity to visit one of the last inhabited local troglodytes, whose home has withstood the test of time. Carved into the rock using simple hand tools, these century-old residences blend seamlessly into the rocky slopes of the surrounding mountains. Some dwellings date back over 2,300 years, although only about ten original troglodyte homes remain.
Continue your adventure to Gser Kabaw, a hidden gem that offers a glimpse into the ancient past. Explore the fascinating ruins of this archaeological site, where ancient civilisations once thrived. Marvel at the intricate stone carvings and architectural remnants that narrate the stories of a bygone era. Let your imagination soar as you envision the vibrant life that once flourished within these historical walls.
As you venture into the picturesque town of Nalut, be sure to stop by the Nalut Fortress. This centuries-old stronghold serves as a testament to the town’s strategic importance throughout history. The fortress not only offers stunning vistas of the surrounding landscape but also provides a glimpse into the town’s past, showcasing its defensive architecture and the region’s historical significance.
Finally, arrive in Ghadames (600 km, 8 hrs. with stops), a UNESCO World Heritage-listed old desert town. Settle into your accommodation and prepare to explore this remarkable destination, rich in history and culture. (B,D)

As you wander through the old city, capture the essence of Ghadames by visiting iconic landmarks, including the stunning Great Mosque and the grand fortress. The historic part of town, surrounded by a protective wall, was home to seven different clans and showcases remarkable Islamic architecture. Today you will wander through the ancient west coast harbour side city of Sabratha set along the picturesque Libyan coastline. Here you will explore the many ancient Roman Ruins this UNESCO World Heritage Site has to offer. One of these archaeological sites is a well-known Sabratha Amphitheatre spreading over 80 metres long and three stories high. Marvel at its impressive architecture and imagine the vibrant energy that once filled its seats. A magnificent structure that once hosted theatrical performances and gladiatorial contests, it is one of the largest theatres on the African continent.
You will also visit many mausoleums, archaeological landmarks and temples, a standout is a temple dedicated to the sea Goddess Isis, built to protect ships and their crew at sea. This temple is of importance as Sabratha was a port city and maritime trade made the city wealthy, remnants of roman roads remain. In the afternoon you will be transferred to the airport for your onward departure. (B)

This category of tours involves light trekking, walking, cycling, rafting or kayaking for a few hours each day with a small amount of inclines and declines. You will require a reasonable level of fitness and good health to participate. It is important to note that due to the nature of some of our trips, they may take place in remote areas (with basic facilities) and can involve long travelling days on various modes of transport.
Suggested preparation : At least 3 months prior to departure, it is recommended that you undertake aerobic exercise (this may include jogging, cycling or fast walking) for 30 minutes, three times a week. It is also advised to walk on variable terrain and in variable weather conditions. For a cycling adventure, road cycling twice a week is recommended and for adventures which involve paddling and kayaking, it is important to gain confidence and rhythm rather than speed prior to departure.
This category of tours involve trekking, kayaking and cycling for period of 6 to 8 hours a day at a fairly consistent pace. Ideal for people looking to slightly increase the heart rate. For our moderately rated tours, you must have a good level of fitness and also be in good health. It is also important to be prepared for variable weather conditions. Altitude may also come into play. This category of tours may involve visiting remote areas where facilities can be quite basic. Accommodation may also involve camping, homestays or basic accommodation where facilities may not be considered of western standards. To enjoy this style of travel, it is suggested for travellers to have a reasonable level of fitness and health, a positive attitude, as well as a fairly active lifestyle. An open mind is also required.
Suggested preparation: At least 3 months prior to departure, it is recommended that you undertake 45mins – 1 hour of aerobic exercise, three to four times a week. Some potential exercises that could be beneficial include hill walking with a backpack on over variable terrain and weather conditions, as well as running and cycling dependent on the activity you plan on undertaking.
This category of tours involves trekking, kayaking, cycling or other adventure activities in remote areas for up to 8 to 10 hours a day. It is important to note that with the remoteness of some regions comes a variety of other challenges such as variable weather conditions, accommodation as well as facilities. You must have an excellent level of fitness and good health to be able to partake in this category of tour. You must have confidence in your own ability and be in good physical condition. Includes extended periods of endurance.
Suggested preparation: At least 3 to 4 months of strenuous exercise, four times a week. When preparing for treks it would be beneficial to participate in hill walks with a weighted day pack (approximately 5-8 kg) once a week for aerobic fitness and strengthening of leg muscles. It is also important to do this on variable terrain to prepare for challenging adventures. When preparing for cycling adventures, regular bike riding (at least 4 to 5 times a week for 1-4 hours is essential). It is also important to cycle on uneven surfaces or even participate in other aerobic exercises such as running or swimming to build up strength and stamina. Altitude may also be a factor in these tours.
This category of tour often involves extreme trekking, cycling or other extreme adventure activities. It is important to expect remote and poorly defined tracks and to be prepared for variable weather conditions for 10 to 12 hours per day (may sometimes be more depending on weather and altitude). These adventures are suitable for travellers who have prior experience in strenuous travel and activities, are extremely fit and have excellent health. It is also important to note that some of the terrain on these adventures will involve trekking in snow, at high attitude levels and may require technical equipment.
Suggested preparation: It is important to note that physical fitness should be an ongoing activity, commencing around 5-6 months prior to departure, or even before if you have no prior fitness. Exercise should focus on building maximum endurance and stamina. Four to five hard sessions of 40-60 mins per week should be completed and can include exercises such as going to the gym, running, swimming or cycling to focus on building aerobic stamina. It could also be beneficial to prepare by hiking on rough terrain, in extreme weather conditions or partake in altitude training.
