Romania: Where Folklore Walks Beside the Carpathians

Romania is a land where stories linger in stone castles, where mountain trails echo with folklore, and where everyday life carries the warmth of centuries-old traditions. In Transylvania, fortified towns like Brașov and Sibiu recall Saxon roots, while the painted monasteries of Bucovina and the wooden churches of Maramureș reveal artistry that has endured for generations.

The Carpathian Mountains shelter bears and wild forests, the Danube Delta thrums with birdlife, and the Black Sea coast offers a slower rhythm beside fishing villages and seaside towns. In Bucharest, Belle Époque architecture, Communist landmarks, and café culture live side by side, giving the capital an energy that is both historic and modern.

With Crooked Compass, you’ll experience more than iconic sites. Share homemade plum brandy with welcoming hosts, wander markets fragrant with cheeses and fresh breads, and step into communities where music and dance still mark the seasons. Romania invites travellers to encounter its heritage not as a story of the past but as a living expression of resilience, creativity, and spirit.

Essential Romania Travel Guide

Before You Go

  • Visa: Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, the UK, EU, USA, and Canada do not require a visa for short stays (up to 90 days within 180 days). Always check the latest entry requirements before travelling.
  • Health Considerations: No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry into Romania. It is recommended to be up to date with standard immunisations. Travellers arriving from yellow fever–endemic countries may need proof of vaccination.
  • Language: Romanian is the official language. Hungarian and German are spoken in certain regions, while English is increasingly common in cities and among younger people, but less so in rural villages.

Packing Essentials

Romania’s climate shifts with the seasons and geography, so layers are key.

  • Light clothing for summer months and warmer days.
  • Warm layers, jackets, and scarves for autumn and winter, particularly in the Carpathians.
  • Comfortable walking shoes for cobbled streets, fortified towns, and forest paths.
  • Modest clothing when visiting monasteries, churches, or rural communities.
  • Rain protection for spring and autumn showers.
  • Pocket-size tissues, moist towelettes and/or anti-bacterial “water-free” hand cleanser.
  • Mosquito repellent and microfibre towel.
  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen.
  • A reusable water bottle for day trips.

Optional but useful: binoculars for birdwatching in the Danube Delta, and insect repellent in summer months.

Cultural Etiquette

  • Greet people properly with a firm handshake when meeting new acquaintances. Friends and family may greet with a kiss on both cheeks, starting with the left. If unsure, wait for the other person to initiate.
  • Use formal titles and surnames until invited to use first names.
  • Modest dress is expected in religious sites, with shoulders and knees covered.
  • Punctuality is valued, though social gatherings may run later than scheduled.
  • Don’t assume everyone speaks English. While younger people and those in cities often do, older generations and rural communities may not.
  • Offer your seat to the elderly on public transport. It is customary to give up your seat for older people, pregnant women, or those with disabilities. Not doing so may earn you disapproving looks.
  • Table manners are generally European-style, with the fork in the left hand and knife in the right.
  • Gifts should be given and received with both hands, and it’s customary for the recipient to open the gift immediately.
  • When visiting rural homes, it is polite to remove shoes and offer a small gift such as flowers, sweets, or wine.
  • Photography in monasteries and religious sites may be restricted; always ask permission.
  • Don’t discuss Dracula too much. While Romania embraces the Dracula legend for tourism, many locals find it cliché. Transylvania is about much more than just vampires.
  • Don’t put your bag on the ground. Many Romanians believe this brings bad luck and financial loss. If you do it, someone might warn you about it.

Getting Around Romania

  • Trains: Connect major cities and towns, though often slower than road travel.
  • Buses and minibuses: Cover shorter routes and rural areas, but may be crowded.
  • Taxis and ride apps: Available in cities such as Bucharest, Cluj, and Iași; always confirm the fare or ensure the meter is used.
  • Domestic flights: Operate between Bucharest and regional hubs.

Accommodation

  • Cities: Modern hotels, boutique stays, and heritage buildings.
  • Countryside: Family-run guesthouses and traditional farmhouses.
  • Remote regions: Rustic lodges and simple village homestays with basic facilities.
  • Unique stays: Monastery guesthouses and vineyard estates.

Climate & Timing

  • Spring (March–May): Time of renewal, with blooming flowers, green landscapes, and gradually rising temperatures. The countryside becomes lush, making it a great time for nature walks and visiting historical sites without summer crowds.
  • Summer (June–August): Generally hot, especially in the lowlands and cities like Buchares. During this time, rural villages come alive with traditional festivals, making summer a great time to experience Romania’s cultural heritage.
  • Autumn (September–November): Brings cooler temperatures, and a stunning display of red, orange, and yellow foliage. By November, colder air sets in, and higher altitudes may experience the first snowfall. Wine regions, such as Dealu Mare, are at their best during the grape harvest.
  • Winter (December–February): Winter in Romania can be harsh and snowfall is frequent, especially in the Carpathians, making Romania a prime destination for skiing and winter sports in resorts like Poiana Brașov and Sinaia.

Tip: Romania’s weather varies greatly by region; pack layers to adapt as you move between cities, mountains, and rural landscapes.

Romania Awaits With Story and Soul
