Crooked Compass is a boutique travel company and tour operator for the culturally curious. We design small-group and tailor-made journeys that go beyond sightseeing – these are experiences that connect you to the world’s most fascinating corners through story, culture, and perspective.
We specialise in off-the-map destinations and purposeful travel design. Each journey is built on three principles:
Crooked Compass isn’t for everyone. We’re for those who crave depth over conventional comfort, meaning over marketing, and adventure that leaves a lasting mark.
Every Crooked Compass journey is graded to help you choose an experience that suits your pace and comfort level. These range from Easy to Tough, taking into account walking distances, terrain, altitude, remoteness, and available facilities.
In simple terms:
You’ll find each tour’s grading clearly listed on its page. If you’re unsure, speak to our travel designers – we’ll give you an honest, realistic assessment, not a sales pitch.
Our journeys span Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and the Pacific, but never in the obvious way.
We go where stories still feel untold – from desert oases in Oman to untouched valleys in Kyrgyzstan, or forgotten tribes in Papua New Guinea. Expect raw beauty, deep cultural immersion, and rare access to places few have explored.
If you want a completely private experience, our Tours By Design service creates bespoke itineraries anywhere on earth, crafted entirely around your interests.
Crooked Compass designs its journeys to remote destinations with safety as a central pillar. The company operates with ultra-small groups, experienced local guides, and carefully structured logistics that reflect real on-the-ground conditions. Routes, accommodation, and transport are selected deliberately, and itineraries are paced to support wellbeing and situational awareness.
Crooked Compass manages risk through a disciplined, multi-layered framework that begins at product design stage and continues through to on-the-ground delivery.
Before any journey is launched, destinations undergo a detailed risk assessment process. This includes review of Australian Government Smart Traveller advisories, DFAT guidance, local government regulations, insurance considerations, infrastructure capability, medical access, seasonal conditions and political context. We assess not only whether a destination is operationally viable, but whether it can be delivered responsibly and with appropriate contingency planning in place.
Our itineraries are built in close consultation with long-standing local partners, regional fixers and trusted operators who provide real-time intelligence and nuanced local insight beyond public reporting. These relationships are critical in distinguishing between perceived risk and actual operating conditions.
Every program is structured with layered safeguards, including vetted accommodation partners, transport providers with established safety records, experienced local guides, and clearly mapped logistical flows. We incorporate contingency planning into all departure frameworks, identifying alternative routing, backup suppliers and evacuation pathways where required.
In the lead-up to departure, travellers receive detailed pre-departure briefings that outline practical considerations, cultural context, health and safety information, and destination-specific awareness guidance. We ensure travellers depart informed, prepared and with realistic expectations.
While journeys are in operation, we maintain continuous communication with our local teams. Conditions are monitored against Smart Traveller updates, local government advisories and direct on-the-ground reporting. Should circumstances shift, itineraries are adapted promptly, responsibly and lawfully.
In the event of an on-the-ground incident or crisis, Crooked Compass activates a structured crisis management protocol. This includes immediate coordination with local partners, assessment of traveller safety, engagement with relevant authorities where necessary, direct communication with travellers and their emergency contacts, and escalation pathways internally within our management team. Decisions are made conservatively and in alignment with both local law and Australian consumer obligations.
We do not operate speculatively. Every departure is continuously assessed against real-time intelligence, regulatory compliance and practical realities.
This intelligence-led, governance-driven approach allows our travellers to access complex and lesser-travelled regions with appropriate preparation, structured oversight and strong operational support.
Crooked Compass requires comprehensive travel insurance as a condition of booking for all journeys, particularly expedition-style trips. Insurance must include adequate medical coverage, emergency evacuation, and repatriation appropriate to the destination and activity level. This requirement reflects the realities of travelling in regions where medical infrastructure may be limited.
Crooked Compass also applies structured safety planning across all itineraries, including local risk assessments, guide briefings, and contingency arrangements. Travellers receive clear guidance before departure outlining both the safeguards in place and their own responsibilities when travelling in complex or physically demanding environments.
Crooked Compass is particularly well suited to solo female travellers seeking culturally immersive small-group adventures. With a maximum of 12 travellers on our ‘Signature Tours’, the group environment remains supportive, manageable, and conducive to trust. Experienced local guides and clearly structured itineraries help reduce uncertainty in unfamiliar settings.
Crooked Compass journeys often attract independent, experienced travellers who value cultural depth and respectful engagement. The company provides clear communication before departure and realistic pacing on the ground, helping solo travellers feel confident and well supported, especially in remote destinations where independent travel can be more challenging.
Crooked Compass handles dietary requirements with care and transparency. Travellers are required to notify dietary needs within the specified timeframe after booking, and Crooked Compass communicates these requirements to our local suppliers wherever possible. In remote regions, however, food availability and infrastructure may limit flexibility.
Crooked Compass sets expectations clearly before departure regarding what can and cannot be accommodated on each journey. Travellers remain responsible for checking allergens and understanding local food contexts, reflecting the realities of travel in developing or remote areas.
Tours By Design is our bespoke travel service for those who want a journey that’s theirs alone.
You tell us your vision – where you want to go, how you like to travel, your interests, and pace – and we’ll curate a private itinerary that feels handcrafted, not packaged.
Whether we adapt an existing itinerary or create something from scratch, we design with care, drawing on our trusted local networks for exclusive, insider access. Every element – from boutique stays to one-of-a-kind encounters – reflects your personality and purpose.
Crooked Compass offers a distinctly refined and intimate approach to adventure travel, setting itself apart from larger operators through its focus on boutique experiences, premium comfort, and cultural depth.
– Intimate Group Sizes for Deeper Connection
Crooked Compass delivers small group tours with a maximum of 12 guests, creating a more personal and immersive experience. This smaller group size allows for stronger connections between travellers and more meaningful engagement with local communities, compared to the slightly larger groups (10–16 people) offered by larger tour operators who cater to a wider demographic.
– Premium Adventure for the Sophisticated Traveller
Designed for the sophisticated traveller who is young at heart but not necessarily in age, Crooked Compass offers a premium adventure product that balances exploration with comfort. While the journeys are rich in cultural and natural discovery, there is a strong emphasis on returning to quality accommodation at the end of each day wherever possible. This contrasts with the more budget-conscious or tiered comfort offerings of other larger tour operators.
– Unique and Boutique Accommodation
Crooked Compass prioritises accommodation that reflects the charm and character of each destination. We work with boutique and locally inspired properties, avoiding large western chain hotels unless no other infrastructure exists. This approach ensures that the accommodation experience is as authentic and memorable as the destinations themselves. Other tour operators offer tiered comfort levels, from budget to premium but their core offerings lean more toward value-based travel.
– Off-the-Beaten-Path Itineraries
While many tour companies offer adventure travel, Crooked Compass specialises in uncovering hidden gems and lesser-known destinations. Its itineraries are handcrafted to include rare cultural experiences, tribal interactions, and remote nature-based adventures that are often not offered through mainstream and larger operators who tend to focus on more popular destinations with broader appeal and larger tour volumes
– Purposeful and Ethical Travel
Crooked Compass integrates conservation and community support directly into its journeys, ensuring that travel has a positive impact. While other tour companies also have strong sustainability credentials, Crooked Compass offers a more curated and boutique approach, with a deeper emphasis on local engagement and responsible tourism.
Crooked Compass ‘Signature Tours’ operate with a maximum of 12 travellers and are built around destinations that require specialist access, permits, and long-standing local partnerships. These departures are carefully curated and run selectively, allowing Crooked Compass to prioritise depth, access and meaningful cultural engagement rather than volume.
Many of the regions we operate in are remote, politically complex or culturally delicate. In some cases, we are working with diminishing or fragile tribal communities where access must be handled with sensitivity, respect and established trust. Our long-term relationships on the ground allow us to enter these environments responsibly and lawfully, often securing access not readily available to the broader market.
‘Signature Tours’ are structured around time on the ground, contextual learning and small-group intimacy. These are not checklist itineraries. They are designed to allow space for understanding, dialogue and perspective. Travellers are guided not only through landscapes, but through the historical, political and social frameworks that shape them. Education is woven throughout each journey, ensuring the experience is not simply observational, but perspective-shifting.
While many of the destinations are remote and logistically complex, comfort is elevated wherever possible. In environments where infrastructure allows, we incorporate premium accommodation, experienced local specialists and carefully selected service partners to enhance the overall travel experience. Where comfort cannot be standardised due to location constraints, expectations are managed transparently, with the emphasis placed on access, authenticity and integrity of experience.
Crooked Compass ‘Signature Tours’ are for travellers who understand that true immersion requires patience, trust and thoughtful design. They are for those seeking rare access, informed insight and experiences that leave a lasting intellectual and emotional imprint.
Our tours are led by specialist local guides – people who don’t just work in their region but belong to it. They are historians, conservationists, anthropologists, storytellers but above all, locals who are born and bred in their home region.
We believe a guide deeply rooted in their community offers a more powerful experience than one who simply passes through or is text book trained. Working this way ensures your travel dollars directly support the people who make your journey possible.
Our travellers are curious, experienced explorers who have seen the world but are always searching for what is next. They are not first-time travellers or checklist tourists. They seek the stories beneath the surface and want to engage with places that still feel raw, real, and untouched.
Our small-group tours attract those with a passion for culture, nature, and meaningful connection. They value sustainable and responsible travel, care deeply about the communities they visit, and travel with purpose rather than impulse.
A Crooked Compass traveller looks for authenticity over comfort, discovery over convenience, and depth over distraction. They are drawn to the unique, the lesser-known, and the extraordinary.
We call them Cultural Purists – travellers who want to see the world differently.
Crooked Compass tours are designed to be intimate and immersive, with group sizes capped at a maximum of 12 guests. This ensures a personalised experience and allows for deeper connections with both fellow travellers and the destinations visited.
Each tour includes breakfast daily, along with either lunch or dinner depending on the itinerary. In remote or regional areas where infrastructure is limited, all meals are typically included to ensure comfort and convenience.
Your tour cost also covers entrance fees, local taxes, fuel, private transportation, accommodation, and the services of an expert local guide. If your selected itinerary includes internal flights, these are incorporated into the overall package price.
Crooked Compass prioritises boutique and character-rich accommodation that reflects the charm of each destination. Large western chain hotels are only used when no alternative infrastructure is available, maintaining the authenticity and uniqueness of the travel experience.
Crooked Compass is designed for experienced travellers who actively seek remote, lesser-visited destinations and are comfortable navigating complexity and changing conditions. Our guests are seasoned explorers who are not easily swayed by mainstream narratives or popular opinion. Instead, they prefer to experience destinations firsthand, uncovering the stories, people and perspectives that lie beyond the obvious.
Typically aged 55 and over, many of our travellers are mature explorers and solo women who value cultural depth, learning and meaningful engagement over speed, predictability or luxury excess. They are well educated, open minded and inquisitive by nature, travelling with purpose and a desire to return home enriched.
While they are drawn to remote and lesser-known corners of the world, they also appreciate comfort and quality wherever it is possible. The Crooked Compass experience balances discovery with thoughtful accommodation, recognising that perspective-shifting travel and personal comfort are not mutually exclusive.
Our journeys are best suited to travellers who understand that true off-the-beaten-path exploration involves basic infrastructure, variable conditions and a shared responsibility for flexibility. We are not designed for those seeking rigid itineraries, high-volume touring or guaranteed luxury standards in every location. Instead, we attract adaptable, prepared travellers who embrace local realities and value connection over convenience.
For our guests, travel is not about ticking boxes or collecting passport stamps. It is about curiosity, context and meaningful encounters that reshape the way they see the world.
For a first-time client, Crooked Compass typically recommends journeys that balance strong cultural immersion with moderate physical demands and clearer infrastructure. These tours still access remote and emerging destinations but are carefully paced and supported by experienced local guides and structured logistics.
Crooked Compass provides detailed pre-departure information and clear expectation-setting so first-time guests understand the style of travel before departure. This allows new clients to experience the depth and intimacy of ultra-small group travel while feeling well prepared for the realities of remote regions.
At Crooked Compass, authenticity is at the heart of every experience we curate. We work closely with local communities who are passionate about preserving and sharing their cultural heritage. Each experience is selected based on its ability to support these communities in meaningful ways, whether through economic empowerment, cultural education, or the protection of traditional practices.
We prioritise experiences led by locals who are eager to teach, guide and share their stories. This ensures that travellers gain genuine insight into the culture, rather than a performance tailored for tourists. By engaging with communities that value and actively protect their traditions, we create opportunities for respectful exchange and deeper understanding.
Our approach is not about observation from a distance, it’s about participation, connection and learning. This is what makes a Crooked Compass journey truly transformative.
The majority of Crooked Compass travellers are aged 55 and over. They are experienced, curious and confident explorers who have often travelled extensively and are now seeking something deeper and more meaningful.
Rather than following the crowds, they’re drawn to unique, culturally rich destinations that offer a sense of discovery. While they have a strong sense of adventure, they also value comfort and quality, preferring a premium travel experience that allows them to explore remote regions without compromising on style or substance.
Our travellers are young at heart, open minded, and eager to learn, they travel not just to see the world, but to understand it.
Each Crooked Compass tour includes a physical grading listed on its tour page, giving clear guidance on the fitness level required to participate confidently. Most of our itineraries are graded as ‘easy’, suitable for travellers who enjoy exploring without strenuous activity.
For those seeking a more active experience, we also offer a selection of tours designed to get the heart rate up. Whether you’re after gentle cultural immersion or a more physically engaging adventure, there’s a journey to suit your comfort and capability.
Your Crooked Compass tour price includes all outlined meals in the itinerary, bottled water throughout the journey, and the first drink with any included meal. In remote or regional areas where infrastructure is limited, all meals are typically provided to ensure comfort and convenience.
Also included are entrance fees, local taxes, fuel, private transportation, accommodation, and the services of an expert local guide. If your itinerary features internal flights, these are covered within the tour package price.
Additional costs may include any meals not specified in the itinerary, personal beverages beyond what is provided, laundry, gratuities, souvenirs, and other personal expenses. Crooked Compass does not offer optional extra tours, ensuring a fully inclusive and transparent experience from the outset. We can of course assist with pre and post touring extensions should you require additional services.
Where you stay is part of your story.
We hand-select boutique hotels, eco-lodges, heritage properties, and character-filled guesthouses that reflect the essence of each destination. You might sleep in a Mongolian ger, a centuries-old riad, or a contemporary boutique retreat – always chosen for authenticity, comfort, and a strong sense of place.
If you’re travelling privately through Tours By Design, you’ll have full control over the style, from intimate boutique to indulgent premium.
Transport is chosen to complement your experience, not just connect the dots.

Yes. If one of our small-group tours appeals to you but the dates do not fit, we can operate the same itinerary privately for you on your preferred dates. We can also adjust the pace, accommodation, or duration to match your needs.
Crooked Compass releases touring dates approximately two years in advance to accommodate guests who prefer to plan early. Our journeys often explore remote and unique destinations with limited availability, so securing your spot early is highly recommended.
As soon as you find a tour and date that suits you, we encourage you to book sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment. Early booking also allows for better preparation and peace of mind as you look forward to your adventure.
Not necessarily. Our small-group tours are designed to deliver premium experiences at excellent value. Customised itineraries through Tours By Design are priced according to your choices, including accommodation level, inclusions, private guides, and timing.
A private tour gives you flexibility and personalisation without unnecessary extras. You are paying for exactly what you want, nothing more.
Crooked Compass cancellation policies reflect the operational realities of remote travel and early supplier commitments. Cancellations must be provided in writing and are calculated from the date notice is received. If cancelled more than 60 days before commencement, the deposit and any required instalment payments are forfeited. Between 59 and 45 days before commencement, 75% of the total booking value applies as a cancellation fee. Within 44 days of departure, or in the case of a no-show, 100% of the booking value is non-refundable.
Crooked Compass deposits are non-refundable because services begin immediately upon confirmation, including coordination with local partners and suppliers. Transfers to another group departure date are treated as a cancellation of the original booking. If travel is prevented due to illness, vaccination status, or failure to meet testing requirements, refunds are not available. Supportive paperwork for travel insurance claims are offered where appropriate. In Force Majeure situations, Crooked Compass may reschedule, issue a credit valid for 24 months, or provide a limited refund based on recoverable third-party costs. Comprehensive travel insurance is a condition of booking and is strongly recommended from the time the deposit is paid. For up to date terms and conditions, please refer here.

This category of tours involves light trekking, walking, cycling, rafting or kayaking for a few hours each day with a small amount of inclines and declines. You will require a reasonable level of fitness and good health to participate. It is important to note that due to the nature of some of our trips, they may take place in remote areas (with basic facilities) and can involve long travelling days on various modes of transport.
Suggested preparation : At least 3 months prior to departure, it is recommended that you undertake aerobic exercise (this may include jogging, cycling or fast walking) for 30 minutes, three times a week. It is also advised to walk on variable terrain and in variable weather conditions. For a cycling adventure, road cycling twice a week is recommended and for adventures which involve paddling and kayaking, it is important to gain confidence and rhythm rather than speed prior to departure.
This category of tours involve trekking, kayaking and cycling for period of 6 to 8 hours a day at a fairly consistent pace. Ideal for people looking to slightly increase the heart rate. For our moderately rated tours, you must have a good level of fitness and also be in good health. It is also important to be prepared for variable weather conditions. Altitude may also come into play. This category of tours may involve visiting remote areas where facilities can be quite basic. Accommodation may also involve camping, homestays or basic accommodation where facilities may not be considered of western standards. To enjoy this style of travel, it is suggested for travellers to have a reasonable level of fitness and health, a positive attitude, as well as a fairly active lifestyle. An open mind is also required.
Suggested preparation: At least 3 months prior to departure, it is recommended that you undertake 45mins – 1 hour of aerobic exercise, three to four times a week. Some potential exercises that could be beneficial include hill walking with a backpack on over variable terrain and weather conditions, as well as running and cycling dependent on the activity you plan on undertaking.
This category of tours involves trekking, kayaking, cycling or other adventure activities in remote areas for up to 8 to 10 hours a day. It is important to note that with the remoteness of some regions comes a variety of other challenges such as variable weather conditions, accommodation as well as facilities. You must have an excellent level of fitness and good health to be able to partake in this category of tour. You must have confidence in your own ability and be in good physical condition. Includes extended periods of endurance.
Suggested preparation: At least 3 to 4 months of strenuous exercise, four times a week. When preparing for treks it would be beneficial to participate in hill walks with a weighted day pack (approximately 5-8 kg) once a week for aerobic fitness and strengthening of leg muscles. It is also important to do this on variable terrain to prepare for challenging adventures. When preparing for cycling adventures, regular bike riding (at least 4 to 5 times a week for 1-4 hours is essential). It is also important to cycle on uneven surfaces or even participate in other aerobic exercises such as running or swimming to build up strength and stamina. Altitude may also be a factor in these tours.
This category of tour often involves extreme trekking, cycling or other extreme adventure activities. It is important to expect remote and poorly defined tracks and to be prepared for variable weather conditions for 10 to 12 hours per day (may sometimes be more depending on weather and altitude). These adventures are suitable for travellers who have prior experience in strenuous travel and activities, are extremely fit and have excellent health. It is also important to note that some of the terrain on these adventures will involve trekking in snow, at high attitude levels and may require technical equipment.
Suggested preparation: It is important to note that physical fitness should be an ongoing activity, commencing around 5-6 months prior to departure, or even before if you have no prior fitness. Exercise should focus on building maximum endurance and stamina. Four to five hard sessions of 40-60 mins per week should be completed and can include exercises such as going to the gym, running, swimming or cycling to focus on building aerobic stamina. It could also be beneficial to prepare by hiking on rough terrain, in extreme weather conditions or partake in altitude training.
