This itinerary combines remote landscapes with rare cultural encounters and two incredible winter festivals; all set within some of Mongolia’s most striking winter environments.

Travel across frozen Lake Khuvsgal into the Darkhad Depression to attend a 2-day Reindeer Festival, where nomadic Tsaatan tribes gather to celebrate their spiritual connection to the reindeer herds they live with. Spend time with this small nomadic community, gaining insight into a way of life centred entirely around their reindeer. Continue through remote northern terrain to the Khuvsgal Lake Ice Festival, a photographer’s dream, where ice sculpture competitions, horse-sled races and traditional performances take place directly on the ice. Return to Ulaanbaatar via an overnight journey on the iconic Trans-Siberian Railway, then discover Terelj National Park in winter and experience the exhilaration of dog sledding across the frozen steppe.

On arrival, meet your local guide and driver and begin the overland journey to Khatgal, continuing onward to Khuvsgul Lake, one of Mongolia’s most striking natural landscapes. During winter, the lake freezes into a vast expanse of ice framed by surrounding mountains.

Arrive at your ger camp and check in. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure to settle in and take in the stillness of the landscape. (B,L,D)

Day 3 – Reindeer Festival & Darkhad Depression
Reindeer Festival Mongolia Crooked Compass

After breakfast at the ger camp, depart for the Darkhad Depression, travelling across the frozen surface of Khuvsgul Lake and into one of Mongolia’s most remote northern regions.

Continue to the Reindeer Festival, where the Tsaatan reindeer herders gather to celebrate their culture and traditions. Once a thriving community, the Tsaatan (Tsaachin)  tribe has dwindled in recent years leaving only 200-400 members left in northern Mongolia. Their entire existence is based on their reindeer herds which provide them with milk for producing cheese, antlers for carving and medicinal purposes, transportation and on the odd occasion, meat. Part of the Tuvan ethnic group, this small tribe is truly nomadic, regularly moving in search for a rare type of lichen and grass for their reindeer.

Experience the atmosphere of the festival, with traditional performances, games and competitions set against the winter landscape. In the evening, attend further festival events before transferring to your lodge. (B,L,D)

Overnight – Jarganat Lodge – Wooden Cabin (or similar)

Day 4 – Reindeer Tribe Visit & Festival
Reindeer Mongolia Winter Crooked Compass

After breakfast, visit a Reindeer Tribe camp in the surrounding taiga. Spend time with the Tsaatan  herders, gaining insight into their nomadic lifestyle and close relationship with their reindeer.

Continue to experience the Reindeer Festival, with further opportunities to observe traditional practices, cultural performances and community gatherings. Return to your lodge in the evening. (B,L,D)

Overnight – Jarganat Lodge – Wooden Cabin (or similar)

Day 5 – Return to Khuvsgul Lake
Lake Khuvsgal Mongolia

After breakfast, depart from your lodge and begin the journey back towards Khuvsgul Lake, travelling through the remote landscapes of the Darkhad Depression. Drive across open valleys and snow-covered taiga forests, passing reindeer herding areas and isolated winter camps. Along the way, there are opportunities to stop for short walks and photographs, capturing the stark winter scenery of northern Mongolia.

As you approach Khuvsgul Lake, the landscape opens into a wide frozen expanse framed by surrounding mountains. Arrive and settle back into your camp. (B,L,D)

Overnight – Ger Camp with shared bathroom facilities

Day 6 – Khuvsgul Ice Festival
Ice sculpture winter Mongolia Crooked Compass

Witness the opening ceremony, where local herders and performers gather, and explore displays of ice sculptures and artisan crafts. Throughout the day, observe and participate in traditional activities including ice wrestling, horse sled races across the frozen lake, archery, and tug-of-war. Cultural performances, including throat singing and dance, take place during the festival.

Lunch is taken either at the festival site or back at camp. In the afternoon, continue exploring the festival grounds before transferring to your hotel in Murun for check in and dinner. (B,L,D)

Standing at 40 metres high, the statue towers over the surrounding landscape and includes an exhibition hall and museum at its base. Once inside the statue, climb to the horse’s head to stand on a viewing platform that offers superb views of the steppe.

After arriving into Terelj National park, experience dog sledding, travelling across the snow-covered terrain with a local team of sled dogs. Continue to Aryabal Monastery, set within the hills of the national park, offering expansive views over the surrounding valley.

Later, transfer to your ger camp and settle in for the evening. (B,L,D)

“I had a fantastic time and everything went smoothly… My Guide and Driver were excellent… My highlight was the country itself – those vast open frozen landscapes were just beautiful .. Overall I had a great time…Thank you and all at Crooked Compass that helped put my trip together…”

Andrew Sullivan – Mongolia

I reached out to Crooked Compass for a last-minute Mongolia trip our clients wanted, and honestly, I couldn’t have been more impressed. Within just a few hours of sending my email, Mich was on the phone with me, taking the time to really understand everything about our clients and what they were hoping for.

The itinerary they put together was absolutely incredible – it went above and beyond what any of us expected! They were particularly amazing at handling our client’s specific dietary requirements. Their pre-departure emails were so detailed and clear, breaking down everything our clients needed to know – it made the whole process so seamless and stress free.

Not only that, but the pricing was fantastic and came in lower than we anticipated. Their local knowledge is outstanding, and the way they communicated with us throughout the whole process was just wonderful. The level of detail and care they put into every explanation and arrangement really showed their commitment to making our clients feel completely comfortable and prepared for their adventure.

I can’t thank the Crooked Compass team enough for their amazing work, and I’m so excited to continue working with them for future adventures.

Holly Velardo – Mongolia

Every day I was blown away with new scenery and experiences not expected. Great company, lots of laughs, special care and constant assistance from guides and drivers. Excellent accommodation and food – I would do it all again in a heartbeat. VERY happy to promote Mongolia as a ‘must see’ country with wonderful hospitality and delightful and very different experiences every day. Now my friends understand that it was NOT a crazy idea to go travelling on my own to a remote and foreign country. Our photos tell the whole story!

Shevauneen Geiger

The trip was above and beyond my expectations. I was impressed with not only the professionalism in the organisation of the tour but also when things didn’t quite go to plan how they were handled. The personal relationships of the guide with the local people made a huge difference to our amazing experience and I doubt very much that we would have had this with any other travel group. Thanks to Lisa and her team in Mongolia for taking us down a “Different Path”.

Kerrie Pain

Crooked Compass was wonderful! I wanted to go to one of Mongolia’s golden eagle festivals but had some serious time constraints & they made it happen. They were quick to respond by email and phone, extremely helpful and always enthusiastic. It was a pleasure working with them!

JJ – MGEF

Everyone! Get off the beaten track and look at something different. See how the rest of the world really lives. Spend your time with the local population, rather than a crowd of other tourists. Check out Crooked Compass for some real adventure and insight into the world….

Yvonne Rothall – Mongolia and Kazakhstan

Wow, what a travel experience!! So good to explore a region and share it with the locals, not hordes of other tourists. It was great to get off the beaten track and experience a country’s culture and people so different from my own. The scenery was amazing, the local guides insightful and the accommodation first class! Thanks, Crooked Compass for a well organised tour full of great experiences.

Carolyne and I had the fortune to travel with Crooked Compass and its founder, Lisa Pagotto to the Mongolian Eagle Festival and then to Kazakhstan from 11 September to 26 September 2025. We can only heap praise on Lisa to her and her local team. Her knowledge and expertise in working in remote, off beat and ‘in the middle of nowhere’ places around the world is quite obvious. Likewise, the local team she assembled were magnificent. The information provided pre-travel was comprehensive. The running of the tour was smooth and without incident. Lisa and her people provided a once in a lifetime experience, which is what Crooked Compass provides with such ease. We will be travelling with Lisa in the future and highly recommended to others.

Mongolia, an adventure of a lifetime! Thanks to Crooked Compass for such an amazing trip to Mongolia and the Golden Eagle Festival. There are not enough words to express how wonderful this trip is. To attend the Golden Eagle Festival alongside the locals and really feel part of it just takes your breath away. Our private camp was right amongst the action. And to tour the Gobi Desert beforehand was just stunning. Pinch yourself moments.

Jacqui Vincent – Mongolia’s Golden Eagle Festival

The Crooked Compass golden eagle festival is a one-of-a-kind curated journey.
One in which you will remember with pleasure and gratitude. A chance to immerse yourself in a nomadic culture and presence, only felt by the heart and being in the moment.
