Empowering Papua New Guinea’s Future Tourism Leaders

12/12/2024

The soft opening of Crooked Compass Lodge marked not just the launch of an exceptional new destination but also a turning point for tourism in Papua New Guinea. This month, we welcomed 21 aspiring guides to begin their training journey with Crooked Compass—a pioneering step in a country with no formal guide training system.

Recruits came from far and wide, representing regions as diverse as the Sepik, Tari, Jiwaka, and the Highlands. Many overcame incredible challenges to be part of this program, travelling for days by foot, boat, PMV, and plane. Their determination to seize this opportunity speaks volumes about their commitment to showcasing the rich culture and breathtaking landscapes of their homeland.

For some, this was their first experience with formal training. Despite limited or no access to formal education, their passion and eagerness to learn were undeniable. From mastering guest interaction to deepening their understanding of PNG’s ecosystems and traditions, these recruits embraced every moment. Their enthusiasm was so infectious that a few expressed their readiness to start guiding immediately at Goroka’s cultural sites.

This training initiative isn’t just about developing skills; it’s about creating pathways to economic empowerment and cultural preservation. Tourism has the potential to transform lives, and these recruits represent the future of an industry that connects travellers with the soul of Papua New Guinea.
