A Dream Realised: Introducing Crooked Compass Lodge in Papua New Guinea

12/12/2024

Nestled high above the village of Mando in Papua New Guinea’s breathtaking Asaro Valley, Crooked Compass Lodge is more than just a place to stay. It’s the realisation of a vision—a space where tourism meets community empowerment, creating lasting opportunities and deep connections.

A Journey of Celebration

Our arrival at Mando Village was marked by a traditional sing sing, a joyous celebration of music, dance, and culture. Winding up the path toward the lodge, anticipation filled the air as we prepared to see this dream come to life. The welcome we received from the Asaro Mudmen, their striking traditional attire a symbol of the region’s cultural heritage, set the tone for an unforgettable experience.

Building a Legacy

Construction of Crooked Compass Lodge began in May 2024 and is set to be completed by June 2025—an impressive timeline for a remote, off-the-grid project. The lodge features eight traditional, handwoven huts crafted by the skilled hands of local villagers. These huts reflect the Asaro’s rich cultural heritage, combining simplicity with breathtaking 360-degree views. While basic amenities like showers and bathrooms are still being developed, the lodge’s rustic charm offers guests an authentic highlands experience.

At the heart of the lodge is the dining area, designed to foster connection. It’s a communal space where guests can share meals, stories, and laughter with locals. Adjacent to it lies the entertainment area, where guests can enjoy mesmerizing Mudmen performances, lively sing sings, and the rhythmic beat of drums under a canopy of stars.

A Community’s Pride

The pride and dedication of the Mando community shine through every detail of this project. From the handcrafted huts to the thoughtful relocation of the village church, the locals’ involvement has been pivotal. The church, now located on the lodge grounds, offers guests staying on Sundays a unique opportunity to experience Papua New Guinea’s vibrant spiritual culture through heartfelt singing and prayer.

One of the most humbling moments during our visit was being served the first portion from a mumu, an underground earth oven. This gesture, deeply rooted in Papua New Guinean culture, symbolizes respect and gratitude. It’s moments like these that remind us why we travel: to connect, to learn, and to honour the traditions of the communities we visit.
