A Journey Through Taiwan: My Unforgettable Adventure in the Heart of Asia

Caitlin Rogers from Crooked Compass, recently explored the natural beauty of Taiwan. She shares her highlights below.

When I first arrived in Taiwan, it was early morning, and the lack of sleep left me feeling like I was in a dream. Stepping out of the airport, I was quickly snapped back to reality by a sense of warmth and comfort that surrounded me. It was in the small details—like the delicate tassels on the coach ride curtains—that made me feel welcome. But it wasn’t just the decor—it was the people. From the busy streets of Taipei to the quiet mountains of Alishan, everyone was incredibly friendly, making me feel at ease.

During my time in Taiwan, I was struck by how the country blends the old and the new. One of my first stops was Lungshan Temple, where colourful sculptures and intricate carvings told stories of dragons, phoenixes, and other ancient figures. The respect the people showed—whether offering prayers or seeking guidance—left a lasting impression on me. It made me appreciate how deeply spirituality is woven into Taiwanese culture.

Next, I visited Sheng Li Tea Farm. Though I’m not a huge tea drinker, the cool mountain air and misty surroundings made it the perfect place to try Oolong tea. The experience of sitting on the farm, seeing tea picked by locals in traditional attire, made me feel connected to something timeless. I even dressed in the traditional tea-picking clothes, adding to the immersive experience.

In Yangmingshan National Park, I was lucky to visit at the end of winter. The cherry blossoms were just beginning to bloom, and the park was quiet. The delicate pink blossoms contrasted beautifully with the lush greenery, creating a peaceful atmosphere. I took my time walking through the park, enjoying the serenity without feeling rushed.

What surprised me most about Taiwan was the balance between its fast-paced cities and the deep-rooted traditions. The people carried themselves with a peaceful confidence, often carefree in public spaces, dancing or taking photos without worrying about judgment. It made me reflect on how freeing it is to just be yourself.

Taiwan has a unique ability to honour its past while embracing the future. From ancient temples to high-speed trains, I felt like I was experiencing both worlds in one place. If you’re visiting Taiwan for the first time, I’d suggest embracing the experience with an open heart and mind. The food might push you out of your comfort zone, and things like squat toilets or tricky road crossings may be a bit unfamiliar, but that’s all part of Taiwan’s charm. It’s a place where tradition meets innovation, and that’s what made my trip so unforgettable. If you’re thinking about it, just go. Taiwan’s worth it.
