Lamu archipelago off the Kenyan coast, is one of the few remaining pieces of history in the region. Antique stone houses, heavy carved doors, women dressed in traditional black bui-buis and traditional dhows propelled by triangular sails are some of the many trademarks of the island. The draw card for Crooked Compass though, is the unspoilt culture and atmosphere of busy days of the past where donkeys still take the place of cars - Life goes on as it did 100 years ago.

Day 1 - Arrive Lamu

Jambo! Welcome to the beautiful seaside town of Lamu. You will arrive into Manda Airstrip where you will be met and transferred by boat to your hotel. After check in, the remainder of the day is yours to explore this quaint town and stroll through the cobbled streets exuding the charm of yesteryear’s.

Overnight at Msafini House – Lamu

Day 2 - Lamu

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel. The day is yours at leisure to soak up the ambiance of this fascinating time frozen island.

Lamu Old Town is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa, retaining its traditional functions. Built in coral stone and mangrove timber, the town is characterised by the simplicity of structural forms enriched by such features as inner courtyards, verandas, and elaborately carved wooden doors. Lamu has hosted major Muslim religious festivals since the 19th century, and has become a significant centre for the study of Islamic and Swahili cultures.

Take time to chat with locals, perhaps head out for a cruise on a dhow, a traditional wooden boat, powered only by the wind in its sails at sunset, stroll along the beach and eat local delicacies. (B)
