Located at the heart of the Caribbean is Haiti, a small island nation with a dark history and a colourful future. Every year at Halloween, Haitians across the country prepare for Fet Gede (The Festival of the Ancestors), the most important date in the Haitian Vodou calendar. Visit a Peristyle to view the ceremony and gain a unique insight into the captivating world of Vodou.

Spend time hiking through the beautiful mountains of Haiti as you explore La Visite National Park. Jump into the crystal clear waters beneath the Bassin Bleu waterfalls and relax on some of the Caribbean’s best undiscovered beaches as you spend the night in a community hotel on the island of Ile-e-Vache. Offering festivals, art, hiking, beaches, Vodou, culture and history this is a a true authentic Haitian experience!

Day 1 - Arrival in Port-au-Prince

Welcome to Haiti! Upon arrival in Toussaint Louverture Intl. Airport you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

A group meeting will take place at 6:30pm in the hotel where you will meet your tour leader, and the rest of your group. There will be a briefing and introduction to the adventure that lies ahead. Tonight, a group dinner will be arranged before you start your journey across Haiti!

Day 2 - Port-au-Prince

An early start this morning as you are met at 6:00am to be taken to the main cemetery of Port-au-Prince to witness the early ceremonies of Fet Gede. Today will also include a historical tour of the city featuring; the old Gingerbread houses dating back 120 years; Champ de Mars; Statues of the Heroes, the damaged Catholic Cathedral, St. Trinity’s Episcopalian and the loss of its native art murals, the National Palace and the Historic Pantheon museum.

Today you will spend time learning the history of this tiny fighting island and its struggle for freedom. In the afternoon, you will visit the Atis Rezistans, a group of artists who use what they find on the streets of Port-au-Prince to make fascinating and unusual pieces of art.

Tonight you will return to the Le Plaza Hotel and the remainder of the evening is yours at leisure to explore more of Port-au-Prince. (B)

Day 3 - Fet Gede in Port-au-Prince

Today is the most important date in the Haitian Vodou calendar, Fet Gede, also known as the Festival of the Ancestors. The people of Haiti converge to the capital to dress up, take to the streets and dance in a procession towards the main cemetery to pay tribute to the Gede (spirits of the Vodou religion). You are lucky to be able to arrange a visit to the Vodou religion’s Peristyle to view this ceremony.

This incredible ceremony gives you a unique insight into Vodou and gives you the chance to immerse yourself into Haitian culture as you dance and take part in the celebrations. Be warned: there may be rum involved! (B,L)

Day 4 - Hiking to Seguin

Today is another early start as you travel by car to the end of the road at Furcy, for the start of your overnight hike to Jacmel. Your local guide will hike with you through La Visite National Park, where you will arrive at an auberge in time for lunch. The hike through La Visite National Park is spectacular, as you make your way up the mountain side you will pass through small villages selling fried delicacies and small homemade souvenirs. The hike also offers the best view of Haiti, from high up in the mountains you can see most of the Haitian side of the island of Hispaniola. This afternoon you will have the chance to explore the forest and speak to the owner of the auberge about the importance of the national park and its surroundings. (B,L,D)

Day 5 - Hiking to Jacmel

This morning eat breakfast surrounded by the natural beauty of La Visite National Park, before completing the remainder of your hike down to Peridot.  La Visite National Park is also the home of over 80 species of birds and provides a great opportunity to sport some rare birds, some of which are endemic to Hispaniola. This part of the trek is harder than the first day, the path down the mountain is rocky and it rains frequently in the afternoon. Upon your arrival in Peridot you will be met by a local driver, who will transfer you to your beach hotel on the outskirts of Jacmel. The rest of the day is all about recovery; relax on the pristine beaches and swim in the warm waters of the Caribbean as you reflect on your amazing hike over the mountains. (B)

Day 6 - Explore Jacmel

After breakfast in your hotel at Jacmel, take a trip to Bassins Bleu, the picturesque waterfalls located just a short drive from Jacmel. Arrive back in the city for lunch, before going on a tour of Jacmel with your local guide. (B)

Day 7 - Jacmel to Port Salut

An early rise today, you will be met at 7:00am in the lobby to be transferred to the crossroads about an hour away, where you will be met by one of the local tourist style busses which will take you to your next destination: Aux Cayes. From Aux Cayes, a taxi will meet you and take you to Port Salut, in front of a wonderful long white beach. Enjoy the beaches of Port Salut in the afternoon and take time to explore the town. (B)

Day 8 - Port Salut to Ile-a-Vache

Today you will have the chance to discover more of Haiti’s natural beauty, in the morning a local taxi will take you to the 500 Reflection Steps at Port-a-Piment, a wonderful experience and a spectacular view. Afterwards, take a visit to the Marie Jeanne caves, truly a destination for the adventurous. You will return to the Auberge in time for checkout and a return trip to Aux Cayes, from here you will take a boat ride to your next destination; Ile-a-Vache.

This magnificent island will be a major tourist attraction in the near future – for now there is little infrastructure to support the masses, meaning it will be yours to enjoy! Stay at a community hotel and help the local community with their daily lives, whilst also enjoying the gorgeous beaches and sea of this lovely island. (B,L,D)

2 nights at Village Vacances or similar

Day 9 - Ile-a-Vache

Spend another day enjoying the beaches and waters of the Caribbean as you stay another night on Ile-a-Vache. You will also have the chance to work with locals and help the community to attain skills which may assist them to become more sustainable in the future. (B,L,D)

Day 10 - Ile-a-Vache

Today is your last day on Ile-a-Vache, after breakfast and checking out from Village Vacanes, a boat will take you back to the mainland where you will be transferred via bus back to Port-au-Prince. Once you arrive in the capital, your local driver will be waiting for you at the bus station, ready to transport you to the mysterious Oloffson Hotel, a hotel which featured Graham Greene’s novel The Comedians. The hotel is ageing and has seen better days but is still an impressive old gingerbread house with every room named after a celebrity that stayed there. You will be lucky enough to be here on a Thursday night, when the hotel owner and his band RAM, one of Haiti’s most recognisable Mizik Rasin bands play on the stage located in the back of the hotel, providing an evening of rhythms, dancing and rum! Day 11 - Fly to Cap Haitien

Today involves an early morning transfer to the airport, before you fly to Cap Haitien. Upon arrival you will be transferred by taxi to the wonderful Roi Christophe Hotel located at the centre of the city, before lunch at Lakay Restaurant. The afternoon will include a special tour around Cap Haitien including sites of “Ayiti’s struggles for Freedom”. You will visit; where the revolution started at Bois Caiman, the Breda Plantation where Haiti’s most famous leader worked, Vertieres where the deciding battle was fought against the French, and the chance to view some rocks bearing Taino Indians drawings. Day 12 - Citadelle and Sans Souci Palace

Today is your chance to see Haiti’s most famous building; the Citadelle LaFerriere. You will be met at 8:30am by your driver outside your hotel, where you will then be transferred to the Citadelle in Milot. The fortress is positioned at the top of a 3000 foot mountain and took 20,000 workers 15 years to complete, making it part of a system of fortifications that included Fort Jacques and Fort Alexandre, both overlooking Port-au-Prince in the south. The fortress is reached by way of an 11 kilometre trail that leads up from the town of Milot and most of its interior is still accessible to visitors. Enjoy a fully guided tour of the Citadelle and of Sans Sounci Palace with an included lunch at a community restaurant, Lakou Lakay in Milot.

This afternoon you will be returned to Roi Christophe Hotel to collect your luggage and transferred to Coco Plage, via taxi boat to your overnight accommodation at Norm’s Place, a guesthouse on the bay of Labadie. (B,L,D)

Day 13 - Departure

Today enjoy a boat trip to Amiga Island where a BBQ lunch will be waiting for you. Enjoy your final day in Haiti with lunch and a drink of the beautiful sand. Your return trip via taxi boat to Coco Plage will depart at 2:00pm, before being transferred by vehicle to the airport for your return flight home. (B,L)
