Discover the Western side of Mongolia, home to over 10 different ethnic nomadic groups, including the Kazakhs. Explore a landscape of eternally snow-capped peaks, cast your eyes upon dazzling turquoise lakes, crystal streams and rivers. Experience life like a local as you spend time with two nomadic families with two completely different customs, practices and lifestyles. Be as hands on as you wish from milking the cows by moonlight, to fetching water from the nearby streams and educating the families children. This is truly an immersive journey for anyone wanting to understand Mongolia's inner soul and beat whilst experiencing some of the worlds most raw and spectacular scenery.

Day 1 - Arrive Ulaanbaatar

Welcome to Mongolia! Upon arrival, you will be greeted at the airport and transferred to your hotel in Ulaanbaatar, known to the locals as ‘U-B’. This afternoon after lunch you will set out to explore the city. Visit the Gandan Monastery which is home to a huge gold plated Buddha, a symbol of Mongolian national pride and cultural revival. You will also visit the Ulaanbaatar City Museum, Central Square, and the National Museum of Mongolia where you can learn about the history of this fascinating country through their collection of artifacts from Mongolia and Central Asia dating from the Stone Age to present day. Day 2 & 3 - Tolbo Lake

After an early breakfast you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Bayan-Ulgii province. Upon arrival in Ulgii you will make your way to Lake Tolbo, a scenic drive with spectacular views of majestic mountains, stopping along the way so you can stretch your legs and go for a short hike.

Arrive at Lake Tolbo in the afternoon, where you will meet the members of a Urianhai ethnic nomadic family, who will be your hosts over these two days. Here you will have the unique opportunity to experience their way of life, their culture and traditions. Participate in their everyday chores which may include herding animals, collecting dung for fires, collecting water, cleaning and repairing the Ger and getting involved in activities with the children or even some teaching and horse riding. You will also help prepare and cook tradition meals with your new nomadic family!  (B,L,D)

Day 4 - Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

This morning you will bid farewell to your family and make your way to Altai Tavanbogd National Park (approx. 4-5hrs) passing through the Tsagaan Gol (White River) Valley and the spectacular Altai Mountains, reaching 4000m in height, they form Mongolia’s largest and highest mountain range. One famous spot is ‘Shiveet Hairhan’ – Sacred Mountain, where you will see the largest rock painting site from the period of the Huns (approx 200 B.C.). (B,L,D)

Day 5 - Potanian Glacier

This morning after breakfast you will set out on horseback (or you can hike if you prefer) to Altai Tavanbogd (approx. 11km). Take in the scenery, marvel at the awe inspiring massif of high snow capped peaks. Witness the spectacular Potanina Glacier, a 20km long ice river that originates from the Altai Tavan Bogd Snow Peaks. Return to your camp in the evening, where your cook will be preparing dinner. Day 6 & 7 - Visit Kazakh nomads

Today you will make your way toward the small village of Tsengel were you will meet your hosts for two nights, a Kazakh Nomadic family.

Embrace their warm hospitality and live like a local, assisting in their daily chores and activities, there is also the opportunity to take a horse ride here with your nomadic family, who will proudly show you around their land. You will also meet a Kazakh Eagle hunter and see his magnificent bird, and learn how the Kazakh women make felt and traditional hand crafts. (B,L,D)

Day 8 - Ulgii town

This morning after breakfast you will make your way back to Bayan-Ulgii province. Upon arrival, enjoy a tour of Ulgii city, visiting the museum and then exploring the local market where you will have the chance to observe the locals bartering and bantering at their buzzing marketplace. (B,L,D)

Day 9 - Uureg Lake

Today you will make you way to the beautiful Uureg Lake. Upon arrival, the rest of the day is at your leisure. Why not take a refreshing dip in the lake, or wander around the lakes edge and do a spot of bird watching. (B,L,D)

Day 10 - Visit Durvun nomad family

This morning after breakfast you will drive to the Kharkhiraa Mountain Range. Mongolia has more than twenty different ethnic groups who speak their own dialect, and today you will visit the Durvun nomads who call this area home. Here you will have the opportunity to learn about their traditions and culture, and will also have the chance to ride a traditional form of transport, a two humped Bactrian camel.  (B,L,D)

Day 11 - Ulaanbaatar

Early this morning you will transfer to Ulaangom airport in Uvs province for your flight back to Ulaanbaatar. Upon arrival, you may choose to visit the Narantuul market, also known as ‘the black market’. Full of locals and travelling nomads, it is divided into sections and anything and everything is available here, you will find people haggling over anything from a traditional scarf to a new couch. It is a great place to witness locals shop, eat and do business in this bustling marketplace.

This evening you will enjoy a live performance of Mongolian National folklore. (B,L,D)

Day 12 - Departure

Today is yours at leisure until it is time to depart for the airport for your flight to your onward destination. (B)
