Day 1 - Arrive Kathmandu

Welcome to the buzzing city of Kathmandu! Stepping off the plane is an adrenaline rush in itself for many people. Your eyes darting from left to right, not wanting o miss any of the action, your ears ringing with the whirring sounds of Himalayan mountain life and the aromas assaulting your senses. You will be met upon arrival at the airport and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is yours at leisure to trundle through narrow winding streets or hop in a rickshaw and explore. This evening, a pre tour meeting will take place where you will meet your fellow travellers and receive a briefing on your tour. Documents will be collected this evening, so please ensure you have a copy of your passports, travel insurance and at least four passport photos.

Day 2 – Kathmandu

Following breakfast this morning, you will be met before commencing your city tour of the enchanting city of Kathmandu. Kathmandu for many is exhilarating, intoxicating and exhausting. Exploring the main highlights including a visit to Bauddhanath Stupa which is one of the largest stupas in the world. Discover Pashupatinath, the holiest temple of Lord Shiva, the Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) and Durbar Square. Many travellers are surprised by the sheer number of temples surrounding the square, and the two adjoining squares, some dating back to the 12th century. (B)

Day 3 – Pokhara

This morning after breakfast, you travel by private vehicle to Pokhara. If the weather is clear, the scenery through the country side will not disappoint. Showcasing you with some of the most beautiful Himalayan landscapes, this drive will get you excited for the beauty that is to come.

Upon arrival, you will head to Fewa Lake, the second largest lake in Nepal, where you will spend the afternoon on a boating excursion. As the sun starts to dip, head back to the lakeside for a magical evening. (B)

Day 4 – Pokhara to Jomsom - Trek to Kagbeni

An early start this morning as you fly from Pokhara to Jomson. This flight will provide spectacular scenery if the weather is clear as you fly between Annapurna (8,055m) and Dhaulagiri (8,146m). Upon arrival in Jomsom, you will meet your porters and begin your hike to the beautiful village of Kagbeni. This hike is just over 2.5hrs. Upon arrival, you will visit the traditional house of the monastery on the banks of the Kaligandari. (B,L,D)

Day 5 – Enter Mustang - Trek via Chhuksang Village to Chele

Today, you will enter the restricted area of Upper Mustang. Trek through the river valley using a combination of the high trail and the riverbank pathways. The trail widens significantly revealing an endless stretch of sand on the west bank of the river. Chhuksang village (2,980m) is a beautiful place with white washed houses and agriculture fields with little rain but fertile soil. Your trek continues on as you reach a huge red chunk of conglomerate that has fallen from the cliffs above, forming a tunnel through which the river flows. The trail then leaves the valley and climbs steeply up to the village of Chele where you will overnight. (B,L,D)

Day 6 – Trek Chele to Shyangmochen

This morning after a good night’s rest, you start ascending to Samar as the trail climbs up to the Bhena La (3,840m) before reaching another pass, Yamdo La (4,010m). From here, spectacular views of Tilicho Peak, Yakawa Kang, Nilgiri and Damodar Danda can be seen. You then descend steeply following along a ridge to the small village Shyangmochen.  (B,L,D)

Day 7 – Trek Shyangmochen via Nyi La Pass to Ghame

Today is a short walking day to Ghame. You start gently ascending to Yamda la (3,850m) and reach Gheling which is home to Tibetan influenced houses, before dipping into the lap of Nyi La hill. There are also Buddhist chortens and a monastery to explore. Continue your climb to the Nyi La pass from where you can see a magnificent landscape of the blue, grey and red colours of the surrounding mountains and Himalayan views of Tilicho, Annapurna,  Nilgiri. In the background, you can see Bhrikuti Peak peering through. Your descent will bring you into the large village of Ghame. (B,L,D)

Day 8 – Trek Ghame to Charang - Visit Red Gompa

As you start your days hiking, you will cross the Ghame khola, located along the side of the longest Mani wall (a secret stone wall in Buddhism) in Mustang. As you ascend through the scenic landscape, you will reach Choya La (3,850m). A gentle descent will bring you into another significant village, Tsharang. Visit the Red Gompa which is one of the most famous gompas in Mustang where you can observe collections of statues, painting and thankas. (B,L,D)

Day 9 – Trek Charang via Lola Top to Lo Manthang

This is going to be an amazing day as you reach Lo-Manthang. Ascend gently through the rocky trail and to Tholung Valley.  Continue climbing before you reach Lola Top (3,860m) from where you can see the walled city of Lo Manthang and the spectacular view of the landscape with the far hill being the Tibetan boarder. Day 10 – Lo Manthang

Following breakfast this morning, explore the amazing sites of Lo Manthang which will include the Raja’s Palace, the Red Thubchen Gompa, and the Jampa Lhakhang, Choprang gompa and Chodey gompa. (B,L,D)

Day 11 –Trek to Northwest Valley to Namgyal Gompa, Tingkhar Village

Start todays hiking after breakfast. If you are feeling tired or would simply like an alternative to trekking, today it is also possible to hire a horse to ride instead. Explore Namgyal Gompa and Tingkhar village located in the northwest of Lo Mangthang.  Namgyal Gompa is highly respected by the local Buddhist communities. Located in the mini hillock, this gompa offers fantastic views of the surrounding valley and villages. Continue hiking to Tingkhar village which is the last large village on the northwest side of Lo Mangthang. Spend time discovering these beautiful villages and watching the slow paced life of the locals before returning to Lo Manthang. (B,L,D)

Day 12 – Trek Lo Manthang to Ghami via Chogo La

Today you ascend through the high route as you continue exploring and hiking the remote trails of Mustang. The trail climbs a ridge at 4,070m, crossing alpine meadows and continues ascending to the Chogo La (4,325m) which is also a highest point on your tour. Descend to Ghar Gomba Monastery via Lo-Geker to reach Ghami where you will overnight. (B,L,D)

Day 13 – Trek Ghami to Samar

Returning back through the trail you ascended, you will enjoy hiking through the remote villages with Tibetan style houses, across open plateaus, and natural vegetation. Pass mani walls, chortens, prayer flags and with the mighty Nilgiri Mountain in the background. (B,L,D)

Day 14 – Trek Samar to Kagbeni

A bit of a steep hike today as you start descending towards the Kaligandaki Valley. Here the path can become windy as you make your way into Kagbeni. (B,L,D)

Day 15 – Trek Kagbeni to Jomsom

Trek back to Jomsom today where you will have your last night on the mountain. Celebrate your achievement of hiking through the Kingdom of Mustang with your crew. (B,L,D)

Day 16 – Pokhara

This morning following breakfast, you will fly from Jomsom to Pokhara. Spend the day hiking to the World Peace Stupa, Shiva Cave and David Falls. For those of you keen on mountaineering, be sure to leave time to explore the International Mountaineering Museum. (B)

Day 17 – Shree Nagar

Following breakfast, you begin your four hour drive through the beautiful countryside to Palpa, an ancient traditional village rich in heritage and culture. Continue driving to Shree Nagar Hill Station. From here you can see far off to the horizon backed by views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks. (B,L,D)

Day 18 – Shree Nagar

Spend the day exploring the quaint villages around Palpa and Shree Nagar. Today is a great opportunity to really mix with the locals and see how they live life in the mountains. (B,L,D)

Day 19 – Lumbini

Today, you drive to Lumbini, the birth place of Lord Buddha. The drive is an hour and half and upon arrival, you will visit the monastery and the Lumbini Gardens where the Lord Buddha was born. (B,L,D)

Day 20 – Chitwan National Park

After breakfast, you will make your way to Chitwan National Park. Upon arrival, enjoy some refreshments, before having lunch and learning of the activities on offer here. After lunch, you will visit Tharu village and the National Park’s visitor’s centre. Enjoy the sunset view from the riverbank. This evening, enjoy a traditional tharu dancing (native people) program or spend time watching a slide show on wildlife you may spot here in the park. (B,L,D)

Day 21 – Chitwan National Park

Following breakfast, enjoy a dugout canoe trip followed by a nature walk or visit the Elephant Breeding farm. Before lunch, participate in bathing the elephants. After lunch, spend your afternoon on an elephant back safari. (B,L,D)

Day 22 – Chitwan National Park

Today is a day of park based activities including a 4X4 jeep safari. Keep your eyes peeled for tigers, leopards and other elusive wildlife. (B,L,D)

This morning you drive for an hour and half to Kurintar Spring Resort. Enjoy soaking in the spring water pools and taking in the unique surrounding environment. If you are interested, why not visit the village nearby. (B)

Day 24 – Bhaktapur

A beautiful scenic drive today as you take the highway to Bhaktapur. Spend the night in Bhaktapur Durbar Squire which is great place to witness local works of art, architecture, a rich unique local culture and traditional heritage. (B)

Day 25 – Syame

This morning, you will be met and transferred to Kathmandu airport for the spectacular hour long flight to Tibet. Fly over the magnificent Himalayan ranges providing you with dramatic mountain views the entire way. Upon arrival into Tibet, you will be met and transferred to Syame. (B)

Day 26 – Lhasa

Following breakfast, spend your morning exploring the stunning city of Syame in the morning including a visit to Syame Monastery which is located on the north bank of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. Sitting amongst open farmlands, this monastery was founded in 770AD by Guru Rimpoche. After this you visit the Chim Phu Caves, which is just above the monastery. These caves were used as retreats for meditation. Continuing on, you visit the beautiful Yambulakhang Palace and Yarlung River Valley. Later in the day, you drive onto Lhasa. (B)

Day 27 – Lhasa

Today your local guide will lead you through several of Lhasa’s many monasteries. The first one you will visit is Sera Monastery, a fifteenth century sprawl of golden roofs and whitewashed walls. This well preserved monastery is located just a few miles north of Lhasa and is home to several hundred monks. In the afternoon, you will visit the Summer Palace of the Dalai Lama, Norbulingka, as well as the Jokhang Temple. This temple is the most revered shrine in all of Tibet and is constantly bustling with devout worshippers. You will also be given the opportunity to shop in Barkor, the crowded central market of Lhasa. (B)

Day 28 – Lhasa

A trip to Tibet would not be complete without experiencing the Potala Palace. This palace is Lhasa’s cardinal landmark and is a wonder of eastern architecture. Your first sight of this massive structure will be a magical moment remembered for years to come. It has been a palace since the fifth or sixth century and was once home to the Dalai Lama. This truly amazing day will end with a visit to the Drepung Monastery. Once the world’s largest monastery, housing 10,000 monks, Drepung Monastery lies hidden in rocky ridges just beyond the city. Surprisingly much of the building was left untouched throughout the Cultural Revolution. (B)

Day 29 – Namtso Lake

After breakfast  this morning, you will start your four hour drive to Namtso Lake. Situated at the height of 4,718m, this is a world’s highest salt water lake. The views from here are simply spectacular as you take in the surround panoramic beauty of the lake and great surrounding Himalayan ranges. (B)

Day 30 – Gyantse

The breathtaking views and truly amazing scenery continue as you head southwest, weaving through many magnificent valleys and exquisite Tibetan villages bursting with traditional untouched mountain life. The day will finish in the town of Gyantse. You will spend the night in a hotel in this historical city. (B)

Day 31 – Xigatse

First thing in the morning you will visit Gyantse Dzong. This fort dates back to the fourteenth century and offers some of the most amazing views of Gyantse and the surrounding valley. Before leaving you will also visit the famed Gyantse Kumbum. This magnificent tiered structure is the largest stupa in all of Tibet. If the exquisite gold dome is not enough, this stupa is packed with Tibetan sculptures and paintings.

The drive today is only 90km and takes us to the second largest city in Tibet. Shigatse is a laid back city that provides an excellent opportunity for both relaxation and exploration. As a group we will explore the local market and the Tahilhumpo Monastery. Tahilhumpo Monastery is one of the largest functioning monasteries in Tibet and was able to last through the Cultural Revolution nearly unscathed. It is a great pleasure to spend some time exploring the busy cobbled lanes twisting around these ancient buildings. (B)

Day 32 – Shegar

The views of this desert plateau provide for wondrous entertainment as you travel along the Friendship Highway. This stretch is some of the most spectacular landscape in Tibet. After passing through the small town of Lhatse we will cross Gyatmso La, the highest pass on our journey. The land quickly descends to plains after Gyatmso La. Whilst traveling through the plains, you will see many nomadic herders, quiet countryside life and secluded monasteries.  (B)

Day 33 – Rongbuk (Everest Base Camp Excursion)

After leaving Shegar you will travel only a short distance before turning off the Friendship Highway. Your four wheel drive vehicles will take you south towards the main Himalayan range while passing over Pang La. The view from the top of Pang La is truly stunning. One is able to see all the way from Makalu to Shishapangma. In the afternoon you will descend into the Rongbuk Valley and Everest will jump quickly into view. This is your first chance to catch a glimpse of this awe-inspiring mountain.

Everest Base Camp Excursion (5090m) – If you would like to trek instead of drive you can trek for two hours to Rongbuk Monastery. This will lead you to the base of the highest peak on earth – The North Face Of Mount Everest (8848m.) Or Mount Quomolangma in Tibetan. Explore the Base Camp and catch sight of the Rongbuk glacier. (B)
